RE: Got to make choice by Friday, 5th wheel or TT

With the F150, you really don't have an option for a fiver. I bought a 29' TT when I had my F150, upgraded to the F250, then bought the fiver. I've never regretted it. The fiver pulls so much nicer.

RE: Service Contracts

Initial response, save your money and skip the contract. Other thoughts, as others have said, read that contract in extensive detail and ask a lot of questions before handing over your money. Also, how handy are you? A lot of "repairs" to RV's are nothing more than part(s) replacing procedures and you end up paying a lot in labor for some guy who is only making $10, if that, per hour. Almost all RV parts are available on-line. If you're not handy, do you have a good buddy who is? Give him some cash to switch out parts. Good luck with your decision.

RE: I finally get it about generators!!!!!

We recently camped at a beautiful USDA park. They allowed generators from 10:00AM - 5:00PM. Anybody who had what I call a "construction generator" seemed to be running them all day. We have a Honda 2000, and in today’s day and age, I wouldn’t want to run anything else but at inverter. Sure, they’re twice the price or a little more, but with what we have socked into the RV, it’s nothing. Also, your camping neighbors won’t learn to hate you.

RE: This product REALLY WORKS!

You folks in Southern Cal get all the cool stuff first! It's not available anywhere near us here in Wisconsin, so I guess we'll have to wait for the product to migrate eastward. I like the fact that it is made without and "acids or harsh chemicals". Some stuff on the market is so strong, I worry about the affects of long term use on me and on my 5ver.

RE: How do you do it??? Large campers in the cities...

As a kid I remember it was against some city code to have any trailer on the street for more than x number of days. I know this is very common. Anyhow our family pop up lived in the garage and the cars sat outside. I never gave it any thought, it was just the way things were done. The toys got the garages and cars parked outside. Later on in life, my folks finally rented a spot from a farmer "out in the country" for something like $50 per winter to park the Pup in one of his barns... what a deal that was!

RE: Do I need a slider hitch for my 5vr?

I have a short bed without a slider and have never had a problem. I've had my Wildcat 5ver turned a full 90 degrees with my F250 and I've had no problem. The installer at my selling dealer said he saw no reason for a slider if the hitch is set correctly. So far by my research, he's been right.

RE: Anyone Seen 2009 Jayco Eagle Superlite 28.5BHS?

Nope, but I saw a guys new Eagle (assuming 2009)on a site near mine a few weeks ago, it caught my eye and I'll be looking at one down the road (few years yet). I'd say you're leaning in a good direction. He said it has been their first season with it and he couldn't be happier.

RE: Thinking again

Once you have the H2000, you'll find yourself using it for all kinds of things besides camping. The H2000 or the Yama2400, you can't go wrong with either.

RE: Need help with backing

Get lined up correctly before backing, back slowly. It's very hard to correct a lot while backing, once you're off your mark. I find it better to pull out and start over. I've actually scratched some marks in the gravel, if it's a gravel site, to give me a mark for my tires. This helps a lot when backing on my blind right side. Tilt your mirror to see your tires and follow your marks in. For communicating I've had my wife call me on her cell phone and I set mine on the arm rest in the "conference call setting". That way we can talk freely back and forth and there is no time lost with the keying of a two way radio or talking over each other. This also allows me to have both hands free.

RE: HOW HARD IS IT TO TOW A 40ft 5TH WHEEL?

Sounds like you're only going to be in the fiver while a home is being built, is that correct? If so, how much do you really need for a temporary arrangement? How much do you want for traveling afterwards? Some folks love or don't mind pulling large rigs, I'm not one of them. Mines 31'(actual 32' 7") and I'm looking forward to selling off the bunk house in a few years and getting back under 30'. I've been looking at the Eagle 29. I might even go back to a TT, but love the nice towability of the fiver. Good luck.

RE: Fifth Wheel Wind Stability

Here’s a thought from a northerner who never has to worry about these types of things; except from tornadoes. Did you ever give consideration to installing some good size earth anchors, cable, clamps & turnbuckles? I know they do that up hear for manufactured homes in fear of high winds from tornadoes. I'm sure you could find some good size anchors and such at Lowes or HD. working a cable through your frame in several locations might be a great help with stability. It might just help hold things down when high winds blow? Good luck. We'll be praying it comes ashore where it can do little damage.

Gas Prices Impact on Camping

Summer is 2/3rds over. What impact have gas prices had? Do you think there are less, more or about the same number of people camping? I don't know if it's my imagination, but it seems like there are less campers on the roads, RV's for sure. How has the volume of campers been in campsites, I've heard and seen a lot of mixed reports.

RE: charging battery with generator

Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions. I guess I'm off to the store for a simple three phase charger. Sounds like the best route to go. Also sounds like the dealer got my $10 for a useless cable? :-(

charging battery with generator

I finally took the plunge and bought one of those Honda EU2000i generators. I've rented one several times and it was time to stop giving my money to the rent-it-shop. Anyway, I bought the little accessory cables that allow you to charge a 12V battery. The problem is, no where in the directions does it tell or show how to know when your battery is fully charged. Has anybody used a generator to charge a battery? Does the generator sense it and go to a trickle charge? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

RE: Dometic Recall - NO LONGER REPLACING COOLING UNIT

We got a letter about two weeks ago for our Forest River Wildcat. Called a local dealer, not our selling dealer, no problem, it's getting fixed Aug 4.

Carrying a Canoe

Here's a crazy thought... but has anyone ever figured a way to carry a canoe on the top of your fiver? I haven't climbed up to look; I assume there would be space enough. I would want it towards the rear of the unit. Our roof is said to be fully walkable. Finding out what the roof ribs are made of and drilling into them and installing a tie down bracket or type of roof rack shouldn't be a big deal. I know they might leak, but some good roof patch out to prevent that. Hoisting the canoe up there wouldn't be fun, but I have two strong sons to help. I'm not interested in laying out a lot of cash for one of those front mount rack deals, that most the time will sit idle. Thanks for you comments.

RE: Bunk House....kids really use it?

My 15 & 16 yr old sons still use ours. We love it, it's a seperate room, their privacy and ours.

1-2 times per year.

RE: ok, so when it comes to getting your unit serviced ...

I never gave it any thought, but I guess I don't store anything really valuable in there. I switched out my outside storage door locks, so everyone who owns a camper can't open them. I guess if I was one of these folks with a pricey flat panel TV, I might take that out.
